What do I need to consider when choosing a Hub Location for signal?

XY Sense uses a cellular connection for connectivity. There is a cellular router in our Primary Hub, and there is typically one Primary Hub installed per floor. The location of the Primary Hub should take cellular connection into account.

The Secondary Hub is connected to the Primary Hub via Cat6 cable for its data connection, the location of the Secondary Hub is not as important for this reason, and its location is usually determined by the sensor coverage required.

  • The Primary hubs have a larger cellular antenna in them compared to standard mobile devices so typically get better signal.
  • The bandwidth required is fairly low so a strong signal is not required. (400-700MB per sensor per month)
  • A Primary Hub can connect to up to 4 Secondary Hubs. Only the primary hub requires a sim card.
  • The ceiling space is typically a better place for cellular than the riser cabinet for cellular but a cellular signal strength test can be done in/near the riser cabinet to confirm operability
  • Many buildings have cellular repeaters in them as cellular usage in office buildings is a requirement for staff
  • Normally the base building region has poorer coverage due to the large amount of concrete (elevator shafts etc).
  • A mobile phone can be used to check - generally if we get acceptable coverage with a mobile phone then it will work.
